I remember the Uk television garden makeover programme making one of those community gardens as a surprise for Bette Midler, who was (still is?) involved with the creation of these small green spaces in neighbourhoods in NYC. Really good to see one on here, Pg! :-)

Hi David, I didn't know that about Bette MIdler. There's one on 10th avenue actually, that is quite interesting, and I can think of so many others. The city is always threatening to take them away! Oftentimes there are poetry readings and musical events in them. Of course the summer is a big time for them! I will try to remember to take my camera with me, and next time I walk by one I'll be ready again! Thanks very much!

The BBC programme was Ground Force, and I can't believe that this was done 7 years ago. Visit http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/2195473.stm for info re the programme, and http://www.nyrp.org, the website of Bette Midler's New York Restoration Project, a charity she founded in 1995 to restore parks, disused spaces and community gardens. :-)

Oh cool, I will try to find it. I have community gardens on my mind now, and soon they will be in full force. Spring has been a little slow coming this year, but we will be in full-bloom summer soon enough, and it will be fun to find a garden to escape to, while everyone else is at the beach. Thanks Again, David!

On second thoughts, Pg, just go to the site nyrp.org. Pity you missed the picnic with Bette in Fort Tryon park (it was last Tuesday). Sorryn to have got community gardens in your brain now! I just love going to parks with the kids (Idid a series of blogs here on GOY on the history of parks). I have been a big fan of Bette Midler since I was a uni student back in the late 70s, and am probably an even bigger fan now, with her current gardening efforts. Would love to jump on a plane and see some of those gardens for myself. :-)
