Hi Louise and Marann - this is a St Andrew's Cross spider and won't cause humans any harm. He does make a fascinating web though which helps to catch those really annoying mosquitoes.

Bernieh:
Such a colorful spider! Not only colorful birds but spiders too.

Delonix this is one spider I don't mind seeing - we do get some rather nasty looking ones here. This one however does the most fantastic job of spinning his web that you can't help but appreciate the effort.

Wonderful shot Bernieh, my son visited Sydney a few years back and he took a video of a huntsman spider and that was HUGE, do you get many of those?

Hi Bobg - no we don't seem to get many huntsmen but we do get the bird-eating spider which is a member of the tarantula family.

Kniphofia I love seeing these guys - they're just have the most interesting webs and I can never bring myself to knock them down wherever they might make them.

Yes it is a lovely colour Morgana - and it has lovely markings. You might even call it pretty if you can say that about a spider!
