Sarah...they do not like the smell of them so they do not think there are roses there...it is a trick to their senses...ya gotta think like a deer...lol..."yucko these are stinky..no roses here..duh-huh...."

Not sure I get deer logic...........but hey ho, if it works............. I understand safari parks over here do a 'roaring' trade (boom-boom) in lion dung because it's meant to scare deer. Thing is, there are no big cats native to this country, so where are the deer getting their information from? Maybe they like to visit safari parks at night.....?

It is cougar urine here...I looked at a bottle of that that they had and they wanted $40.00 for a small bottle..decided daisies would have to do..arrgh..I made the mistake of putting a small bird bath dish on one end of the rose garden..started noticing that the rose bush next to it was nearly bare...hmmm..says I ..should move the water...deer like to drink and eat it seems...no water for the birdies in the front garden now.

I've heard the cougar pee doesn't work anyway Cat. None of the remedies do....soap hung around, human hair, dog hair, coyote pee.....nothing. I think deer are smarter than we are!!

The smart ones are the ones who sell these quack remedies at exhorbitant prices.

Now I was told by a gardener who works in the area that he has had very good luck with the cougar pee..of course our deer are chased by cougar on occasion...people have actually seen it happen...poor deer are so terrified...they run into things trying to get away...

Trouble is, were the deer scared by the cougar pee or did they not show up in the first place?
It's a bit like the guy who who was in the pub and kept throwing salt over his shoulder. When the barman asked what he was doing he replied that he did it to keep the elephants away. The barman said, but there are no elephants anywhere around here. Works, doesn't it said the guy.

I wonder how they get the gougar to pee into the bottle?

8 Jun, 2009

I wonder that all the time too...Sarah....gosh...must be really hard work that .

8 Jun, 2009

Toto...the pee scares the *&^%$ right out of them...they do not want to be anywhere near a cougar...it hurts to be eaten a live by one of those things..

8 Jun, 2009

I'm sure it does but do the deer know that?

8 Jun, 2009

LOL..they are a flight animal..I think they think everything wants to eat them...lol..just like horses...our horses would tear an absolute fit if we ever had any of that stuff around them..and I assure you they have never had one bite taken out of them...they know a meat eater when they smell them...and being I am a meat eater..my horses don't quite trust me either...I am sure the deer feel the same...

How is Flash these days?

Fine..I am going out today to get a load of his and his horse buddies beautiful compost they have been putting together for me for a few years...good gardeners, they are, come to find out.

9 Jun, 2009

Nice to know his doing ok Cat.

9 Jun, 2009

He is Toto....just a big beautiful guy...he gets so thrilled at being moved to his pasture...lol..we have to have some on the spot training..thats fun for me though..I love training more than riding really. I don't think I ever even touch a horse without considering the training behind it...and reading the body language is so much fun. They are so deliberate and clear.

Don't think I'd go in for a career as a couger-pee collecting person. ....you'd need REALLY good health insurance...................

Please don't talk about horses Cat - I read your comments and it starts me off yearning to be around horses again.....not going to happen any time soon <:-(
