second year asparagus

So delicate when it gets the ferns....

I like the sprouts better ...but that's the third season..so this season I let it grow up....lol. next spring will be a different story, I imagine.

It looks good in your garden! LOL! Here in San Diego they grow as a horrible weed, impossible to irradicate. : > )

This is the officinalis... I LOVE THIS VEG!!! when it is in season (May-June) I feast on it! can't imagine it being considered a weed... Are you thinking of Sprengeri fern, maybe? it's tough as nails and the fronds have thorns, I've grown that as a houseplant...and I can understand how easily one could come to hate it!!! lol...

There's actually 4 species of Aspergus ferns that are horrible weeds here. Sprengeri fern is one and Asperagus officinalis is another...and two others which I'm not sure of the species.

Aspeagus ferns are almost as bad as Wandering Jew - Tradescantia fluminensis. I just can't get rid of these plants in my yard. Wandering jew is the absolute worst
because within a week it has taken over a large area.
Even the green spider plants - Chlorophytum comosum make me crazy...I mow them down all the time and they still keep growing...and to think people pay for this plant.

Ah hah! Here's the solution D1! give up trying to eradicate and start coddling them...actually the chlorophytum comosum in one of the plants which research has said is very beneficial indoors as it removes some of the toxic substances present in the indoor air!! I grow them and love them...have for donkey's years.... Solution for officinalis is cut the sprouts and eat them!!! delicious! maybe you can eradicate it with a few years of over harvesting...but it might have the opposite effect too! I have just bought Tradescantia "Sweet Kate" it's foliage is a lovely yellow and the flowers are huge royal purple beauties...I also have the other tradescantia with the lovely silver gray-green leaves striped with white..and the purple and green one too! I love them to bits...and you mow them down!!! LOL> what a crazy world aye?

That's funny! : > ) The Asparagus roots have been in the ground for so many years that they are woody and cannot be removed...the Wandering Jew is the plain green leaf form with blue flowers...I have no idea where they come from...because I pull them out from the roots and they still regrow. Spider plants grow extremely fast 365 days a year...and they can take over...however, they are pretty easy to remove, except when the soil is like concrete...which it's like now...however, they mow down easily. LOL : > )

I have the hairy leafed Wandering Jew, I think it's Australian...in full sun it forms a very dense low fuzzy mat...with pretty magenta flowers...

Most of the species of Wandering Jew grow as a groundcover here...however, I don't think the other species are as invasive.
