They are biennial, GT. The second year they send up the blossom stalk which is sometimes 8 to 10 feet tall and branched, yellow flowers produce TONS of tiny black seeds which the birds love...then they die. the plants in this photo are second year...because I like the basal rosette so much I've tried removing the flower head early to see if the height of the plant will be reduced or if it will stay in the lower form...the basal leaves usually die or become ratty as the season goes along and the plant has usually gone to seed and can be removed totally by August. The ones in my garden came from wild seed...I didn't plant them. I bought another var. V. "sixteen candles" and as the song says "makes a lovely light" the stalks are numerous, the flowers smaller (yellow) and only about 36 inches tall. Hoping to see them bloom.

This is mine;s second year. But I guess that;s it for it aye. I'd have to put in more this year to bloom next year. I remember yours from last year, just beautiful.

They will grow tall this second year, and produce lots of seeds, Gt... the birds will probably spread any that you don't collect...so you may have some coming up where you don't expect! I learned to recognize the seedlings and transplant them when they are very small...

They are very hardy Morgana... Once you have them established they will self seed easily. they have a tap root and don't take to transplant...best time to move them is when they are very small...and take as much soil with the root as possible... Have you tried the var. called "Sixteen Candles"? they are smaller plants...but produce a lovely show.

These are a grand size, wonderful. I had one of my mullien come back, I can't wait to see if it blooms. Does the plant increase in size each year, or just have a few years life?
