This little mango tree is in full bloom. It seems to be behind schedule as it should have plum-sized fruit on it already. Photo taken at San Diego Zoo on June 9, 2009.

Does the Mangifera require a lot of water?

Mango trees don't require a lot of water...in fact before and when they bloom...they must have very warm dry conditions. After the fruits set they prefer to have more water.

So it probably developed on the flood plain of some large river system? I've often heard the term"mangrove swamp" is that a reference to this plant or a different one altogether?

Yes, mangrove trees grow along swamps, coastal areas of the tropics and subtropics. I know mangrove trees are native to the southern states along the Gulf of Mexico. It's very different from the mango tree.
