I'm not sure which species of staghorn fern this is located at the San Diego Zoo. Photo taken June 9 2009.

These ferns are grown all over the San Diego Zoo...also, many people have them in their trees. They are so very easy to grow...as they only need water once in a while.

they are completely epiphytic, aren't they D1? all they require from the tree is it's support! Do they require more light than other "ferns"?

Lori:
Yes, they are epiphytic ferns, however, I think they attach them to this tree to make sure they don't fall off...just like the Cattleya orchids to the left. They don't require a lot of light...as these ferns face north.

Platycerium superbum. I have one that's getting some size on the side of a Podocarpus tree. One of my personal favorites.

I've seen some very large ones in the Bay Area. It's a very hardy fern.
