It's a World-Famous Zoo...and World-Class Bontanical Garden. I belong to the Zoological Society, so I can go everyday if I wanted...and I do go very frequently.

It is totally awesome! A huge new area of the zoo just opened a couple of weeks ago... it's called Elephant Odyssey...that's why this area in the photo wasn't completely packed with people. This time of the year the S. D. Zoo is a zoo of people...which I hate! I usually try to avoid the zoo this time of year.
I've been to the San Diego Zoo hundreds of times...however, everytime I go, I discover a new plant or animal...that's what amazes me.

The large tree immediately behind the cereus...is it an Acacia? fantastic cactus...but that tree is lovely!

Yes, it's a tropical African Savannah Acacia which has
large thorns.

You're correct...this is the Acacia tree you see when they show elephants, giraffes in their native Africa on the savannah. This tree the photo is a small tree because they grow very tall. At the San Diego Wild Animal Park there's many of these Acacia trees.

I think the thing I love most about them is their flat tops!! There is a theme park here in Ontario called "African Lion Safari" and when we were there some years ago (25 to be exact) they had two very tall and very friendly giraffes.... one put his head right inside the car and took my son's cheese popcorn! How embarrassing....! He let us have a good look at his face though... lovely eyelashes...and the softest nose ..softer than a horses muzzle. he whipped that bag of cheese corn around and we drove off to the next station before we could be evicted for feeding the animals!! Acacias won't grow in Ontario though!

That's a pretty funny! I can see why the giraffe wanted the cheese corn. lol
The Acacia in this photo doesn't have quite the flat top that a larger tree would...such as the trees located at the San Diego Wild Animal Park...I think the trees like the climate there better than the S. D. Zoo because it gets so blasted hot out there...it's like being out in the desert. The Wild Animal Park is located about 45 minutes drive northeast of the S.D. Zoo.

My goodness Andy that is a tall one, is it caged to protect the people or the plant.

It's caged because there's iguanas (or some other large lizards) in this area. :>)
