Fleece protecting plants

Fleece protecting plants

29 May 2007 - two days before the first judging by the Daily Mail National Garden Competition. Not only did we have a dramatic hailstorm which peppered my Bizzie Lizzies I'd just potted up and planted out, but the temperature plunged in the evening. We worked until 1am protecting the acers and azaleas with loads of fleece and two gazebos. We also put electric heaters in the jungle under garden umbrellas! The Paulownia was too tall to reach and its large leaves were holed by the hail and shrivelled by the air frost. The fleece took more than two weeks to dry off in our lounge!!

Bet your local garden centre did a good trade in fleece that week!!

I've had to re-arrange the shed now to accommodate all the fleece and bubble wrap - it's so bulky!

After submitting 6 photos and a questionnaire we were shortlisted to 12 in the Daily Mail National Garden Competition 2007. Two judges came on 31 May - two days after the hail and frost. We got a phone call next day to say that we were in the final 6 and went to a champagne reception with the other finalists on 2 July at Hampton Court Flower Show. Three judges came for the final judging on 31 July and we got a phone call that afternoon to say that we had won, out of 2000 entries. That was despite such a summer of rain!

OMG how wonderful did you feel?

We had tried for 4 years before we won our local Walsall in Bloom large rear garden category. We had no idea what national judges would think but, from the comments visitors were making, we thought we had something special. We must thank the local judges though - their critical comments spurred us on to create a jungle and build the pagoda (from a kit) so that we couldn't see down the whole garden at once.
