Close up of the leaves. It is probably about 8ft tall and quite spreading. It is supposed to be a small growing tree!

I though Acer Flamingo too Michaella when I saw the pic of the tree. The leaves also look very much like Cornus alba too (red barked dogwood).

Right you are! Yes, I thought so too! That is why I have asked Gee19 to Google it and see.

Must be a tree though, dont you think Michaella rather than a bush - the other pic certainly looks like a tree. I have some Acer Drummondii and they grow in the same sort of habit, just weird how the leaves look similar to dogwood.

Thanks, Michaela & Dawn. I have googled and it does look the same, although I don't know if my daughter's tree has the pinky tinge to the leaves. I'll mention the name to her - it may ring a bell, but then, it may not! They want to prune the tree as it is spreading and I've told them not to until I can find out if it will stand pruning. If it is the Acer, pruning doesn't seem to be a problem and can be done in Spring. Seems it can grow into quite a large tree.

Hi Gee, well my Acer platanoides 'Drummondii' can grow to over 30 feet, I think they are similar to the flamingo, but having said that we have had ours about 8 years and they've probably only grown a few feet since we set them - the acers are a nice tree :-)

I have emailed my daughter to see if her tree ever shows pink tinges but haven't had a response yet. I must admit I have never looked at it and thought 'that's an Acer'! Will keep you informed :)

OK Gee :-)

The bell has rung! Grateful thanks to you both, Dawn and Michaela. My daughter recognised the name vaguely (!) - she is just not into gardening. I will have a proper look at it next time I go down too. I have sent my daughter some care and pruning information. They have had the tree several years now. My daughter had a friend from schooldays who tragically died of breast cancer, leaving 3 children under 5 and the tree was given to them by her husband.

Aww, how nice although sad. I can see now why she wants to keep it in good condition.
