Marie heap of bark

It's Marie's job to move 14 cu metres of bark through the garage and down 6 steps. This is done by filling large black bins. It's Tony's job to load two bins onto a sack truck and to distribute the bark all over the garden. We did have two loads one week, each taking about two days to move.

Oh my! Suddenly my yard clean-up doesn't quite depress me so much!

Our garden isn't huge - 1/3 of an acre - but we don't like weeds! The bark gives quite a pleasant backdrop for the flowers. We used to get the bark from somewhere 10 miles away - it took its toll on the vehicle and our time - each load took half a day to collect. We now concentrate our energies on dealing with the loads we have delivered.

I think you would probably agree Fourseasons, to achieve a lovely garden you have to think really big and work really hard! We incorporate approximately 6 tons of soil improver every year, as we garden on almost pure sand. This quantity of bark may look mind blowing but I bet a beautiful garden like yours swallows it up!

Yes. We have had four of this size of load, plus lots of other loads we've brought ourselves in our people carrier (we found we could get 1.25 cu. metre inside the vehicle - in eleven dustbins and eight sacks!) That vehicle has been a real workhorse - it's 19 years old and has been, in a way, quite expensive because there's really very little in the plant world we can't bring back in it! Just got to keep it going for a little longer!!
We did get the children to help move one of the large loads of bark - cost us an arm and a leg and they kept complaining they were tired and hungry! Have now resorted to doing it ourselves - there's life in the old dogs, yet!
