I have found the same thing that doing a "mass planting" in one area with seeds or transplants will often yield an area that offers a lot of "business" and will become a great focal point in a garden. I'll have to try a few in groups as you suggested! I could see this looking really nice sprouting out in the middle of a few nandenas or Esperanzas.
