Araucaria bidwillii - Bunya-Bunya Tree

Araucaria bidwillii - Bunya-Bunya Tree (Araucaria bidwillii - Bunya-Bunya Tree)

This is one of the most symmetrical Bunya-Bunya trees I know of...it located at the downtown Hayward Library in The San Francisco Bay Area. It's most likely more than 120ft./37m tall. There's a heavy lath structure built around the trunk so the giant super heavy cones (to 50lbs/23kg) won't kill anyone, when they fall. Photo taken May 18, 2011.

This tree is located at the main library in Hayward, CA. where my mom lives (Stan lives in Hayward, also).

There's a metal lattice structure build below this tree. I do remember years ago a person got hit and almost killed by a big cone from this tree. This is when the metal lattice was built.

Ahrr right your mum and Stan are lucky to be able to see this tree then.

They were very lucky the cone did nt kill them I can understand them building a metal lattice around it.

So Stan and you mum are lucky to be able to see this tree.

The person was lucky it did nt kill them as you say no wonder they built a metal lattice around it I am suprised the parks dont have one.

Yes, this tree is probably the best specimen I've ever seen growing in California.

I think its wonderful so I can understand you saying its the best specimen you ve ever seen.

25 Apr, 2018

Yes, for its symmetry, it's the most beautiful and nicest specimen I've ever seen.

Lucky you found this one then.

As a kid I remember this tree. It seems like it's always been this same size, large! lol!

I just read this tree could have been planted around 1870.

lol Gosh Andy I did nt realise you were that old ? joking aside when your a kid things always look bigger but it being 158 years old it likely was big when you were a kid a great age for a tree I am suprided developers have nt cut it down to build like the do here to our 500 year old Oak Trees.

LOL! It's 148 years old (approx). Yes, it must have been full grown at around 60 or 70 years old.

These really old trees are in Heritage Park, the main library is located in the center of the park. Hopefully, these trees will never be cut down!

lol got that wrong did nt I yes148 years old.
At least they are in a space that can take the size of it . Way before you were born then.

Do they put preservation order on the trees over there listing their trees so they are never cut down as they do here. Up my lane they they had to build around an old Tudor hedge row of trees the builders said it was a nightmare as they were so close to them building the houses.

Yes, way before I was born. lol!

Yes, they do have protected trees here which cannot be cut down (only if they're dying or in danger of falling).

lol now are you sure about that ha ha.

Thats good then the nearest one to my back door the middle tree is not a common tree its a Black Locuts but looking it up their life span is about 60 years then die off or fall spreading their pea like seeds mainly into my garden the man who planted it first planted it when he first joined the church he is at least in his 80s or more no wonder the branches are braking off and parts dying.
The Sycamore is far right dark colour you can hardly see it.

I got in contact with my housing association I received a message to day from them stating they have to be cut back as the trees are over lapping intruding on their property he said he is going to see the church he tried a year ago but no one was there when he went to the church so the lady opposite must of complained also last year what was up with housing writing to them so I wont hold my breath . No wonder this country has gone to the dogs. When I went to Citizens Rights they said for them and myself to put it in writing and send it registered post which I did tell housing perhaps they have nt the inteligence to write to them.
