Ceratostigma

Ceratostigma (Ceratostigma Willmottianum)

Coming into flower now, a little early I think.

Weird year really - some things early, whilst others just haven't bothered!
I like this - reminds me of my Plumbago.

its very pretty against that purple.

Thanks - it's the bluest flower I grow, I think. :-)

Hi Spritz - Not too early I think - mine has been flowering for about 3-4 weeks and it was newly planted this year.

I was going on last year - but maybe it was late then! lol.

Sorry - I didn't mean to sound sarcastic or anything - I've got to move mine when I have a moment as it is behind a heuchera which has grown much taller than it is. It is a plant that I absolutely love though because when it is fully in flower it is such a beautiful blue.

I know you didn't. ;-)

I'm surprised that yours is smaller than a Heuchera, though - mine is at least 2'6" - 3' tall. I must get a photo of the whole shrub so you can see.

What happens if you DO move it and it grows taller next year? Will it matter?

Thanks Spritz - I shall probably replant it in another place behind something much smaller in height or even at the fron of a border. My heuchera has grown very tall and my cerotostigma is very short in height at the moment (probably only about 8-9 inches) as it's only been in the garden for about 2 or 3 months - do you think it's worth waiting until next year to see if it does grow taller ? Thanks.

I bought one of these at the beginning of the year but it has died, I was really looking forward to their blue blooms, so thanks for the picture.

Sorry to hear that. Lemondog. :-(

Mariek, did you know there's a much shorter Ceratostigma - mine is just up and doing, with buds, as it's always later to flower. It's called C. griffithii, and the leaves turn red in the late autumn. I think before you move yours you should check the label and see which one you have.

This one gets cut right back to its base in early spring - but I just leave the other one alone.

Thanks Spritz - Thanks for the info - I didn't know there was a smaller one - I shall check the label again today. I usually look before I plant but have probably overlooked it this time. I'll let you know my findings. Thanks again.

I'll be interested to know! :-)

Hi Spritz

I've looked on the label and it says is a C. Willmottianum Forest Blue with a ht of 60cm.

I have looked this up and the height can be up to 1 metre apparently.

At the moment it is very low and spreading. I think I shall probably wait until the Spring and see how it gets on then before moving it. What do you think ?

19 Aug, 2011

Yes, I would leave it where it is. It's only small because it's immature. Mine is a mature plant, and that height's about right, as I said earlier. It dies right back each year and then regrows from the base in the spring, so each year year it should get taller to its maximum.

Thanks for your advice Spritz - will do as you suggest. I have grown one before but it was such a long time ago that I can't remember anything about it really.

Well - they're lovely shrubs, so I wish you success with your new one. :-)
