My Croton is growing very well in this spot where it been for the last three years. Photo taken Aug. 26, 2014.

It's in a large pot and has been in this spot for many years. I do have some in the ground...and they've been in the ground for around 3 years.

I've actually seen several growing around urban San Diego. They tend to grow only to around 6' (2m) tall here.

No, never any woolly aphids; however, in summer of 2010 I almost lost it to some kind of thrip. Almost all the leaves fell off. I used a systemic and it came back stronger than ever. In January of 2013 we had cooler than normal temps and I accidentally let it dry out severely and it wilted and lost many leaves.
In the extremely hot weather we've had in San Diego, which seems like forever. My plant has grown very quickly.
