Andrew I am curious about the pockets the bulbs are within looks like sheet metal formed around them ,what is the purpose of it,I have used similar to separate a complete bed from grass encroaching but you appear to have something different in mind.

Brian - they are copper rings placed around vulnerable plants to keep slugs and snails off. The little beggars get an electric shock if they touch the copper and don't try to cross it (it works!). I bought them from www.greengardener.co.uk - not cheap but 100% effective

Andrew with the price of copper not surprised they are expensive,Have used the copper impregnated mats around things that also works quite well. Its something to give Squirrels a shock I need they do more damage than slugs here.
