This is my favourite Hibiscus ... I'm lucky enough to have this growing in my garden!

Bernieh:

It is a very beautiful Hibiscus. At one time I used to have many varieties and species of Hibiscus. They're so common...so I'd rather just enjoy my neighbor's Hibiscus. : >)

any chance of a pic of whole plant?

Tetrarch:

I've posted pics of this Hibiscus in the past on Goy. If you can't find it in a search I can post them again.

Tetrarch - go to Delonix's photo page. At the top where it says tags, theres a link that says "show more". Click it, then scroll down and select the relevant tag (ie; schizopetalus) - it sorts them out for you!
If you knew this already then forgive me!

Great tip Meanie! Thanks

No probs - took me a year to work it out on my own!

That is lovely................

Milky:

Thanks! : >)

Meanie: I've got to try that feature myself!

Delonix: Beautiful! One thing that has always puzzled me is what pollinates it in its native habitat--it looks like the perfect hummingbird flower, but there are no hummingbirds in Africa!

Tugbrethil:

Maybe birds with similar beaks? : > )

11 Oct, 2010

Hmmm...but they would almost have to hover.

11 Oct, 2010

Tugbrethil:

Maybe different types of pollinating bugs?

11 Oct, 2010

Could it be bats like the Strongylodon? Just a thought!

11 Oct, 2010

Meanie:

Quite possibly! I'm sure there's many types of bats in eastern Africa.

11 Oct, 2010

Could be! I'm going to try to look it up, anyway, just 'cause I'm 'satiably curious. Will post if I find anything!

Well, I did a google and came up with this snippet from "An evolutionary basis for pollination ecology" by S. C. Willemstein:

"....and those of H schizopetalus, H liliiflorus and H rosa-sinensis are pollinated by nectar feeding birds and butterflies."

Meanie:

Thanks for the information! : >)

I know the butterflies like them. We have lots of hummingbirds...and they absolutely love Hibiscus.!

12 Oct, 2010

That accounts for it then! Thanks, Meanie!

Fantastic photo Delonix.

Thanks! I like this Hibiscus, even though it's not as full as the others. :>)

I had one in a greenhouse where I worked. I never did try it outdoors. Are they about as hardy as HRS that are sold?

I saw one growing in Hayward and it survived the freeze of 1990, but froze to the ground and came back.
