Hibiscus schizopetalus - Japanese Laterns Hibiscus

Hibiscus schizopetalus - Japanese Laterns Hibiscus (Hibiscus schizopetalus - Japanese Laterns Hibiscus)

My Japanese Lantern Hibiscus is blooming like crazy with all the hot weather. It's been feeling more like the middle of summer than fall, even for San Diego. Photo taken Oct. 31, 2012.

Thanks! I bought this one a year ago. It has grown very fast and has lots of blooms. It really wants to be put into the ground, though.

Isn't this Hibiscus available for sale there?

How unusual. I have not see this kind around here.

Klahanie:

It's a common Hibiscus here in San Diego. There's a very nice variegated form, also.

I think that we cannot bring plants from US to Canada. We will be driving through California twice within next 5 months. I will have to check.

I would have to grow it inside. The flowers look like little laterns, do not they?.

Yes, that's why it's called Japanese or Chinese lanterns.

Haven't seen it but that doesn't mean it's not for sale. My favorite nursery bring a nice variety of plants, unlike some others!

It most certainly would be available on-line. It's not an unusual plant.

I've not seen one this colour before Delonix. The plain red one is rare enough over here..........

This is the red. Not sure why it has white in the flowers.

So it was a trick of the light?

5 Nov, 2012

No, it actually has streaks of white in the flowers. I think it was because the flowers were old. I'll have to investigate.

6 Nov, 2012

Could it be virused? Sorry, but if you have more than the one Hibiscus it needs to be considered. I had to bin all my Canna last year due to virus and start again from seed.

Meanie:

No. I think it's normal. I think when the flowers get old they turn white.

6 Nov, 2012

I like it with the white!

7 Nov, 2012

I like it too. :>)
