A friend gave me a small pot of crepe myrtle 2 years ago and I planted it out in the ground. Last year it didn't produce any flower at all, but it did this year and I'm very glad :-)
Not hundreds like there in CA, but I see some crepe myrtles by the streets in France too. They are fabulous.

Actually, there's many hundreds of thousands of crepe myrtles trees (it would too difficult to count, as they're so widely grown) here in San Diego.

Yes, we have lots of beautiful flowering street trees. Jacaranda is at the top of the list of most popular. The most widely planted flowering trees are: Tipuana tipu, Bauhinia x blakeana, Cassia fistula, Bauhinia variegata, Tabebuia impetiginosa, Corymbia ficifolia, many Erythrina species (Coral trees)...and the list goes on and on.
