Mangifera indica - Mango Tree - San Diego, CA. (Mangifera indica - Mango Tree)

This large mango tree was full of mangoes next to a chuch south of Downtown San Diego, CA. It was next to the same church as the previous mango picture - different tree though. Photo taken August 19, 2009.

I love mangoes...they are a real treat...but finding nice ripe ones in the grocery is a bit chancy here. The trees are quite large...say ..equivalent in size to an oak? am I right? must be interesting getting the fruit from the highest branches...would there be a few fruit bats around maybe?

Lori:

Yes, I love mangoes! The Coachella Valley, California-grown mangoes
are in the stores now...they are some of the the best commercial grown mangoes in the World! (determined by mango connoisseurs around the World)

Mango trees here are relatively small (30 - 40 feet or 9 - 13 meters tall max.)compared to the trees grown in the tropics. Mango trees gown in the tropics grow to be monsters of more than 130 feet / 40 meters tall and with almost the same width.

There's bats here...however, I think most eat bugs.

I love mangoes, too. On the streets of Brisbane,Australia, where my son and daughter-in-law live, the ripe fruit become a traffic hazard when they fall, being pulped by passing vehicles, and making a slippery mess.

Shirleypoppy:

Yes, mangoes can become very messy during mango season. Here they generally don't grow larger than 30 feet / 10 meter tall. In the tropics as you know they grow to 100 feet/ 31 meters tall and about 70 feet / 21 meters wide.
These large trees produce thousands of mangoes.
