very beautiful, that would brighten up any street, never mind a garden!

It has been used as a street tree in parts of Southern California. It's grown pretty widely along the freeways close to downtown San Diego. It's a very tender tree native to the wet equatorial tropics of eastern Africa.

In North Park (a district of San Diego) African Tulip tree have started to naturalize. In a few other areas including the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park they have started to naturalize. The very light seeds blow everywhere.

In the wet tropics this tree is a huge weed-tree.

i cant believe anyone would regard this as a weed?

Yes, it is very much a weed tree in many parts of the wet tropics. On the Island of Hawaii, on the Hilo side, this tree has taken over in many areas with Alexander Palms (Archontophoenix cunninghammiana). It does look gorgeous with the two growing together.

Where this posted tree is located there's several...and many have popped up all around this neighborhood; however, here in San Diego it will never become a weed tree, because we receive so little rain per year.

Wow that colour hits you does nt it.

Unfortunately, the tree is so much more spectacular in person. Red-orange is one of the most difficult colors to reproduce in photos.

I can imagine it is so its more a vivid colour.

Yes, it's so vivid, however, not as vivid as Delonix regia, which is so bright red it's virtually impossible to see the true color in a photo.

Here's a pic of one.

20 May, 2017

Yes, that's where I got my screen name.
