Strelitzia reginae - Bird-of-Paradise Flowering

Strelitzia reginae - Bird-of-Paradise Flowering (Strelitzia reginae - Bird-of-Paradise)

The Bird-of-Paradise in the front yard is blooming. It doesn't have as many flowers as many others in the neighborhood because it's in a lot of shade from the huge Jacaranda tree, above it. It also doesn't look very big, however it's 6ft/2m tall and has a greater spread. Photo taken Oct. 10, 2011.

I drove by the San Diego Airport today, I forgot about the mass-plantings of Bird-of-Paradise in all the medians. They were all in full bloom. I would think tourist would really notice them, since most places in the U.S. Bird-of-Paradise can't grow outside.

? how many plants did this strelitzia start off as

Not sure; however, most likely just one plant. I think this plant is 30 or 45 years old. They grow wild here by the millions, so you never know their true age.

thanks for telling me another thing how tall can they get i read 2m could they get much higher than 2m whats the tallest you have ever seen in the reginae strelitzia

Strelitzia reginae can grow to 8ft (2.5m) tall here. The Giant-Bird-of-Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) can grow much taller, to 40ft (12m) tall and is very common here, also.

The same here!..I water, throw fertilizers, and my neighbors bloom like crazy even in shade. I think some bop's just bloom better then others. I get a few bloom at a time. Seen them covered in other yards!

They're best left on their own. No water nor fertilizer...just plane neglected...they do best.
