Vanilla planifolia - Vanilla Orchid

Vanilla planifolia - Vanilla Orchid (Vanilla planifolia - Vanilla Orchid)

This is the orchid which produces vanilla of commerce. It's a very large orchid. Not sure if it blooms in winter like most orchids grown in San Diego. Photo taken in the Botanical Building, Balboa Park on Sept. 29, 2010.

Great species. I like its climbing habit and thick alternating leaves.

Fractal:

Thanks! Yes, it can climb pretty high. I guess that's why it's in a pot. It would probably climb up the sides of this lath house it allowed to do so in the ground.

Would love to have one of these. I don't think I have space though, here in New York.

It definitely needs a lot of space. This one is growing up the pillar in the Botanical Building (a giant lath-house). There's many hundreds of orchids growing in the Botanical Building, beside thousands of other tropical plants.
