This was mentioned on GW last Friday, apparently the RHS has this as its No.1 customer problem/enquiry at the moment.

Oh no, Louise, another pest to look out for ... : o (((
21 Mar, 2011
I know :-((
It mentioned pruning it quite hard back after it's flowered and cutting beyond the damage and it should come right again.
I'd spray with insecticide too for a while.
I'm keeping a watchful eye on mine :-/

One of mine defo needs spraying...I must remember to get some spray.

Another GoYer told me that the tell tale signs are holes in the leaves and an awful smell of doggy poo on the plant.
21 Mar, 2011
On GW, Rachel de Thame said that the leaves would "look like lace" by the end of the infestation, where the burrowing had literally sucked everything out of the leaf.
I've seen this on leaves of plants in the past - not currently though.
I don't like the sound of that smell karen ;-)

Not had that smell Karen! I don't have too much trouble with Viburnums, when flowering is finished I give them a good trim with an electric hedge trimmer. The new leaves remain pretty much hole free for most of the year. I have one in the front garden that is always perfect (touch wood)

No, the smell is horrible! No holes on mine though, but I guess the problem is under the soil at the moment. I must get some spray!

I have been inspecting all our plants, it is found on Opulusas well ....trust us to have all the plants that are in danger from this beetle.
Louise how lovely to see you again, looking forward to seeing some of your beautiful Alstroemerias.

Yes, it's great to hear from Louise again, I second that!

I was reading an article today in 'The Garden' mag, in a waiting room, which says Viburnum beetle is now the number one pest, even more prolific than slugs and snails. Wish I'd brought the mag. home with me to read more about it! : o (((
