Kniphofia - Maintenance question?
By Bethanemma

We have a lot of kniphofia growing in our front garden. They have flowered already, but now it all looks a mess! Does anyone know if I cut down the flowers will they regrow this season? In the Autumn can all the foliage be cut to the base? Also - if I cut the flowers to regrow - should they be cut at the base? Apologies for the simple questions.... very new to this all!

yes as bamboo says cut the stem down as low to the ground as possible. take off any dead/dying leaves. any strong new growth needs leaving, give it a feed and you might get a second flush in september.

Cut out the old flowering stems and trim back the plants, taking off dead or dying leaves - all of that growth will more or less disappear in the winter anyway. As far as I know, removing faded flower stems doesn't necessarily encourage new ones in the same year, but it might be worth a try!
