Help with a tamerisk

I have a Tamerisk in the front part of the garden facing West and it has always thrived and produced colour. But this year it has gone very leggy and woody,but there is new growth coming from the lower branches. Should I cut it back to this new growth and when??

I agree with Bamboo, I always cut mine back now once the flowers are finished if you cut back any sooner you will loose all the flowers. Really hardy shrub - we are only a mile from the sea and it survives.

Hey - hang on! There's more than one species of Tamarisk! Mine doesn't flower until later - the end of August, normally! It's a T.ramosissima.

Good point, Spritz, I'm assuming its the one called "tetandra" that's spring flowering! Cazoo, is it spring flowering?

Yes, do it now. This is one of those shrubs, a bit like Buddleia, that can be cut back hard early in the year, although with Tamarisk, obviously after its flowered. Cut it back to the new growth.
