onions

my husband has been growing onions for over 20 years, never had a problem until last night, we had a storm and heavy rain and when he went out later all the onions had minute things on which looked like minature slugs, black in colour, he also noticed some green things, anyone know what they are and do they cause damage to the onions, he had no choice but to spray them, something he has never done before,

i suspect the rain made the soil waterlogged and all the young hatchling slugs came 'up for air'. not too sure what the green things are. need a better description or a photo to be a better help.
slugs dont tend to do much to onions in my experience.
