Plant suggestions for a very windblown garden

I live on moorland, just below the treeline. There's a busy main road next to us. There's always a cold wind blowing across my garden that sometimes is so strong it can blow me over! . Many of the shrubs that I'd successfully grown in my other place (in town) haven't survived up here. Any suggestions please?

Low growing plants that are hardy! And perhaps plants that tolerate seaside conditions i.e. wind, may be escallonia kept small.

Don't know how big your garden is, but you could plant Ulex (gorse) as a windbreak along the boundary between you and the direction of the wind (I'd guess off the moor). You could make a hedge if you have room? this would be better than fencing because it will soften the wind rather than block it, which will force the airflow over the top of a rigid barrier at great speed. That said, here's a rather long list of plants that should tolerate cold, windy conditions Primula Pulmonaria, Cimicifuga, Coreopsis, Armeria, Bergenia, Sempervivum. Shrubs: Berberis Buddleia, Calluna, Corylus, Crataegus, Erica, deciduous Euonymus species, Gaultheria, Hippophae, Ilex, Kalmia, Leucothoe, Pachysandra, Salix, Ruscus, Sambucus ,Tamarix. There are larger trees too, don't know if you want any of those

I live in a similar situation - 1 mile from the sea but a wind blow across an open area - near a road and my tamarix has survived a treat plus it gives you lovely flowers in the spring
