Pruning

I have to be away from my garden from mid July until the end of August. If I want a good crop of roses in September should I prune heavily before I go, or just let things run?

No! Don't prune heavily. Just make sure you've deadheaded properly (taking up to 10 inches of stem where possible, though that amount of stem shouldn't normally be taken past the end of June) before you go. You could also feed them with a specialist rose food, but again, this should be done asap - roses should not be fed past the end of June either.
