This plant is called Scrophularia (Figwort) and it is a native perennial that grows along river banks in wet soils etc. Not quite sure why you have that and not Dahlia's!!!

If it's any consolation, an interesting thing I learned about this plant many years ago is that the flower shape and opening perfectly fit's the size/shape of head of the common wasp.....it's main pollinator!
There!, you'll sleep tonight after knowing that won't you? :-)

I remember when Figwort first came up in our garden, I thought it was something really special and I went to great pains to nurture it and collect seed! It's strange how you can think something is beautiful and worth preserving until someone tells you it's a 'weed'. The interesting thing about this plant is that it is pollinated by wasps. I still secretly like it and don't cut it down unless it's in the way.
