Cordyline Australis - what type of soil for planting?

Hi GOYs!
I would be most appreciative if anyone can offer advice on the best way to plant this in my Garden. What's the best type of material/soil additive to use? This is a small plant I bought which stands about 30-inches from the top of its container. I stay in the West of Scotland and see these beautiful plants in lots of Gardens around my area.
Thank you.

Thank you Bamboo.
Perhaps you can assist further?
The position I would like to use for this plant is on a very gentle slope. The height difference from one end of the slope to the other is only about 1ft. The ground is not as moist as other parts of the Garden however it was covered in polythene and chips. Do you think it would be alright if I planted it here? My intention was to introduce lots of new fresh soil and dig down about 2ft and out around the plant position by about 2ft.
Thank you and I value you thoughts.

Well a slope would be a drier place to be, obviously, though I don't believe your climate up there is particularly dry anyway, is it? Nonetheless, I'd be inclined to plant not more than halfway up the slope - cordyline will eventually reach quite a height, and it's beauty is in seeing it against a backdrop of other plants, not in amongst other tall things, and because it puts up a long trunk like stem, it will hold its growth above lower things growing round it, so is far more effective that way. (This, of course, assumes that you're grading your planting by putting taller stuff at the back, or top of the slope, and lower stuff as you come down, tho I am visualising a slope from front to back, you might actually mean from left to right, not sure)

Thanks again Bamboo.
Actually the plant is to be a specimen and as such shall have no other plants around it. You are correct about my area being wet rather often.
What do you think about digging a hole 2ft deep x 2ft wide and filling with good fresh top soil? Would you add anything else?
Thanks
RAM.

Bit of fish, blood and bone in the planting hole would be my choice. You could also add a bit of Growmore when you put it in, but don't feed again this year after that.

Excellent!
Thanks Bamboo!

Nothing special required - half a day's sun minimum, don't put it somewhere with really dry soil. You may need to tie the leaves together at the top for protection during winter, as you live in Scotland - you do this by gathering them from the bottom of the stem and sweeping them up in a bunch and tying them up.
