I too have to move a large Acer, but sadly not the plant I originally had. I had a dissectum purpureum, but the dog jumped on it and it nearly died, one small section left, but that has since disappeared, I now have this humongous acer dissectum with pinky green leaves, but it has grown too quickly and is going to crowd out my nandina, Bamboo and Paulownia, as well as a few smaller shrubs around it to boot. We'll have to compare notes next year to see if any of them survived. :-)

I don't know, Stewking, but we are going to try something similar this winter. Personally, I don't expect to be sucessful :-((. Ours is surrounded by a lot of plants that I don't intend to disturb; if you can lift yours with a huge rootball then you might be more sucessful.
Good luck with it.
