I have a tree/shrub which I am told is called a stag tree but it's overtaking. Help

Essex, United Kingdom

I do not know what is proper name is but I would really appreciate any advice on how to contain it or even get rid of it as I want to use that part of my garden for another veggie patch. Thanks

I think this may be a Sumach. If so, they produce suckers and can be a bit of a menace.

I wouldn't have one in the garden - cut it down and dig out the roots - trace then along so that you don't leave any in. Good luck!

Sounds like Rhus (sumach), which suckers. Read my blog on tree stump treatments if you can't get the roots out - you'll need to treat the suckers in a similar way to the roots.

I inherited one of these that suckered all over the place. I had the top taken down and it suckered even worse and then I got honey fungus. You really have to dig out every piece of root - a long, slow job - to get rid of this tree :-(

Unusual shrub but a thug. My father had one in his garden and it ran everywhere. I was down the village this afternoon and I noticed one in a neighbours garden - there were tiny suckers coming up all over the lawn. I don't know how it can be contained without a major excavation project to remove all the suckers.

How do I say thanks?
