Yes, I've enclosed my precious Hostas in copper rings for several years now and not a chewed leaf to be seen. Trouble is - the blighters all go to the other plants and double-decimate them in temper!

I used copper for the first time this year. I bought the sticky copper tape for my tubs. It fell off within a cou0le of days so I reverted to vaseline round the pot rims and all has bee fine.

I have used copper tape around a hosta tub for two years, just replacing it this spring. It has worked brilliantly. Before attaching it, wash and dry outside of pot/tub as particles of dirt splash up when it rains-then you should get it to adhere well.See my hostas in my photo section Mobee. Also make sure there are no other plants overhanging hostas as snails use these as a 'bridge'.

I got some slug rings for the first time this year and as Mac commented, they have worked up to a point. They are fine when plants are alone and not touching other ones but when they spread, the little devils can travel from one plant to another. Obvious really.
I too bought them on ebay; £9.99 for 5 small ones and £14.99 for 5 larger ones. Bit expensive but it seems they don't deteriorate with age.
Now that the plants are bushy, I'm back to the old grapefruit diversion which seems as good as anything.
I tried the garlic spray but it didn't work well and my Cosmos were devoured.

they work up to a point as does old copper pipe cleaned up a bit and copper tape. Slugs dont like the electrical charge as they slide over it.
