Buy the product 'Nippon' with the small round containers. You just put some small holes round side, put couple of drops of the nippon liguid in the container, put the lid on and then put it down where the ants run, they take it back to the ants nest and hey presto no more ants. We seem to get them every year about same time in the spring and it works well for us.

'Nippon' works, but ants don't bother me unless they are in the house.

I always used jeyes fluid, it seemed to deter them. You could mop the step with it or kitchen floor, wherever they are entering.

I'm with Mickledaisy here - it requires you to watch which main route they take - there will be one, and they'll be heading for something and once you've worked that out, put the Nippon containers down - the tube of drops works better than the dust, but the trick is to site it in the right spot.

Follow the 'line' back to the nest and poor boiling hot water straight from the kettle into the heart of it, killing the queen, that always does the trick for me.

What a bloodthirsty lot! Poor little ants;-) I feel sure they do more harm in the garden than is thought though. I lost a clematis once and at its roots was an ants nest. I think it possibly causes too much drainage loosening the roots etc. Still live and let live......unless it's aphids, can't find much compassion for them for some reason. If they are on my best roses I'm there with a paint brush and dilute washing up liquid , otherwise the birds and insects see to them. Still, boiling water...........on the Queen......

We really suffer and have to do the terrible line of ant powder around our house! Does work for us until it rains hard!
