I don't remember planting this...don't know where it came from &...don't know what it is! Maybe I'd been on the sherry but I swear I have no idea how this came to grow by my back gate!!
Can anyone enlighten me?!

The stems and leaves are definitely Clematis montana, but as Janey says, the flower looks strange - unless it's produced a few late blooms?? Not sure about the flowers at all.
The plant could be from a seed blown there or dropped by a bird.

The flower is similar to a Verbascum or even a hardy geranium, are you sure the flower isn't belonging to a plant behind?

Yes, Janey, I see what you mean. It does indeed look like a Verbascum!

I agree with you guys - looking closely at the picture, it appears that the clematis might have lassooed the main stem of the verbascum.

Blimey yes sorry guys....the leaves are of the clematis behind...I'll put another photo on that shows the whole plant if I can. It's about 2 foot high & little new plants have grown up from the main stem. :0)

Yes, sounds like Verbascum Fluff, I have lots in my garden and some photos of them on my pics.

Well the leaf there looks like a Clematis, usually the early Spring type, but the flower is unusual. Im not sure that the Clematis and the flower are one and the same plant?
