If i prune my montana back will i kill it?

Thank you for both replies, I have decided to plant another climber (probably a clematis) near by and prune my montana back but not too harshly after flowering next spring.

You can prune montanas to keep them in their allotted space, but let it get established first, won't you! And feed it after you have 'tidied' it.
