Are there any seeds i can plant now that will flower this year ?

I have spaces between stuff that's gone over in sun and a small 4inch wide strip not very sunny.Average soil not acid.

try virginia stock seed they grow and flower in about 6 weeks. small about 4-6" high with lots of different colours.
and as bamboo says late bedding too.

marigolds (calendula) if we hopefully get a bit of a longer warmer end of summer/early autumn.

I can't think of any - you could nip out and buy some late bedding, like asters, which will flower until the frosts.
