this is the time of year for many fungi to produce their fruiting bodies [toadstool/mushrooms] majority do no harm to the garden.

They are called earthballs. Harmless and will disappear in a couple of weeks or so. If you look closely you may see some with holes in the top - this is where they puff out their ripe spores to be carried away on the wind.
