This is a seedling sown earlier this year. The parent plant is 5 feet tall and flowers in late spring. The flowers are pink and fluffy like a thalictrum. The stems are noticeably red and the leaves are a fresh green with deepish veining.

Could it be that weed called 'Winter Heliotrope'? It's actually a garden escapee, from years ago - now to be found in hedgerows. It has mauve flowers a bit like a flat bottle-brush in winter.

Could be. I know of it as all over a garden i work in
Not actually Mustard, just another name for it 'Something Mustard' or Mustard Something'.
Hydrangea flower head sounds a bit unusual thou

I've had a look at winter heliotope and at mustard on google images and its definitely not either of these. The flower heads are more similar to a hydrangea in shape.

Hmmm. a puzzle, then! Sorry - did try!

Are the leaves in pairs or do they spiral? From your photo, they look to be in pairs (two young paired leaves in the centre). Could be a Labiate of some sort, maybe a Stachys?

I've just looked at pics of labiatae and stachys and neither are fitting the bill. I'll post another pic of the parent plant which shows the structure of the flowers. I didn't want to put this pic on the site as it also shows our rubbish hedge!!!!
