Try a short growing Acer called Little Princess or for stunning effect - Acer '' Ozakazuki'' this will grow tall but the one I have is being topped to keep it in check( buy a small one and keep topping it so that it forms a horizontal growth patten) also most Hostas will do the trick and go to an aquatic centre where they have specialist water plants.
