Hi Algie :) Not sure what you mean by "plug and play" lighting? I have several types of lighting in my garden...mains electric for security lights and lamps on the patio, fairy lights for atmospheric lighting, pond mister and pond lighting....and loads and loads of candle light :))
It all depends really on what aspects of your garden you want to highlight at night, and the "mood" you are trying to create. My advice would be to seek out a decent electrician, and discuss your needs with him.

I bought some solar fairy lights on ebay and they work great, even in winter

hi algie1 , get yourself down to the local b&q and have a look at their low voltage outdoor lighting.
you have an indoor transformer and run outdoor cable , which you splice into as and where you want lighting.
very good but you will need to be able to terminate cables into a fairly tight waterproof box, a little more tricky than wiring a plug!
i think there is another system which clamps over a cable and the 'spikes' pierce the cable and produce a connection.noy as good as the 1st method but easier.hope this helps.............steve
