How and when do I prune clematis 'Freckles'?

This is going wild over my pergola at the moment but I don't want to ruin its flowering chances, as it flowers in winter and is a very welcome addition to the garden. Can I cut it back now?

It is obviously not a Group 1 clematis, but you do need to ascertain whether it is a Group 2 or Group 3, as this will determine WHEN it is pruned and WHAT is pruned, and if you are a real officinado, HOW.

Here's the RHS advice on pruning C. Freckles...
"Once established, prune only if the plant outgrows its allotted space, by cutting back to 1m (3.25ft) from the ground immediately after flowering."

Hi Antigone, the best time to prune your winter flowering clematis would have been immediately after flowering. You could tidy it up a bit now but would probably lose some of the blooms which will be forming. I think I would leave it and enjoy the mass of flowers this coming Winter, it sounds to be very healthy, then give it a good trim early Spring.
