Does anyone know what this is please

cestina

By Cestina

South Bohemia, Czech Republic

I don't think I planted it because I would never have put it where it is....so possibly a weed.

The flowers open from the bottom up and seem very sweet, pretty blue and white stripe, but insignificant in comparison to the large leaves. Plant stands about 30ins high

Absolutely no idea, sorry. Never seen this before and I have seen a lot of plants (weird and whacky).

Any chance of a close up of the flower (say in profile) to see if the ovary sits at the back of the flower (inferior) or inside (superior). This will help greatly in narrowing down the group at least.

It could be Henbane Cestina......it looks very similar to your plant. The whole plant is poisonous.....grows on wasteland etc.

The more I look at this, the more I am starting to think that it is a Lobelia. There are 200 species so it could be and the calyx at the back of the flower (from what I can see) looks right plus I can see what looks like an inferior ovary (swelling at the back of one of the flowers) so this puts it almost certainly in the Campanula/Lobelia complex of plants.

If you snap off a flower, is there any milky sap? If there is, I would hazard a guess at one of the them. The flower looks zygomorphic (one plane of symmetry) too which would put it there.
