This is a definite self /bird sown shrub. The leaves are velvety in texture rather than hard. Flowering now, but that may be the odd weather.

No way. It is more like a Viburnum or a Hydrangea than anything else.

i do think hydrangea esk. its very pretty. geulder roses also have the larger outer petal, and that is a viburnum isnt it. sorry Owd not much help am I? are the stems velvety as well?

The general opinion seems to be that it is Viburnum tomentosum. Nice bonus if it is.
