Will an Alder tree grow happily on chalk soil? Dr. Hessayon suggests not

I thought that I had asked this question before but it
seems that it got lost.
My soil is quite good alluvial soil on top of a chalk base.

it will grow but not necessarily 'happily'. as bamboo says
there are some species that will be better suited.

He's right to a degree - Alnus cordata and A. glutinosa will not do well on "shallow soils over chalk". So that leaves you with A. incana (prefers drier soil), A. rugosa or A. x spaethii.
