how much sun does a mahonia plant need?

United States

It is 3 feet tall and has a lot of sun and hot humid conditions.

Answers

I have one in the shade and one in full sun in the afternoon, the one in the shade isn't doing as good as the one in sun.

That is because Mahonia needs a humus rich, moist, well-drained soil in partial shade. So both of yours are not where they really like be.
