Thats very pretty and I agree with Motinot a lovely soft lemon. I used to have a Mahonia in my garden at our previous house, I ve forgotten just how pretty the flowers are and the foilage is very attractive too. Think its going on my long list of wanted plant for 2011;0)

Thanks all , the smell is lovely almost like ' Lily of the Valley ' it does grow big Sandra this was approx. 6/7 ft last year we chopped it down in the autumn to about 3ft . it hasn't done it any harm , the resin inside is a vivid yellow and stains whatever it touches ... I think you will have to get one Carole if you have the room :-)

That's a shame Amy,I haven't the room for one, that's the only problem with a small garden, very limited, and already have as many large ones as possible...lovely though..

Never mind Sandra , enjoy what you have , why do we always want something we can't have ...lol....

Same here Amy dont think I have enough spare room either, its a shame I wonder if there are dwarf species?

Carole / Sandra in my book it mentions a low growing, spreading form of Mahonia used for ground cover called Mahonia aquifolium , it,s leaves turning bronze or pruple in the winter . The flowers are borne in dense clusters in March and April .... I might look that one up myself for ground cover ...........

Thanks Amy will certainly look it up, I think I remember my nextdoor neighbour having a small one when we lived at the cottage;0)

Lovely flower to this plant, we have just bought Mahonia Charity....is this Charity? we want it to grow very large, at the moment we are walking it around the garden....you get my drift?

Can you put it down for a minute Angela ..LOL... Mahonia Japonica and Mahonia Charity are two different shrubs the flowering spikes of the 'Japonica' radiate from the stem like the spokes of a wheel as in this photo .. the 'Charity' flower heads stand upright together more and I think have thicker more dense flower heads , they both grow approx 6ft tall + good luck with finding the right place for it :o))
