name of a plant

in the grounds of our local hospital there is a plant that grows to around 4 ft has large dark purple leaves and I think orange flowers rather like gladioli please can anyone tell me what it is, it would be great in my garden

Does sound a bit like a Canna, but a pic, as Andrew says, would be good, or a better description - what shape are the leaves, for instance, are there any midribs showing colour, does it have palmate leaves?

I have checked out the canna and its the nearest I can see so thankyou for that my husband was going to get a photo when he was there but walked past them when he came out of the hospital typical

If you could post a photo it would help with identification. Is it in flower now? The only thing I can think of is a canna
