How do I get rid of Toadstools?

They are growing through the fence at the bottom of my garden. There used to be alot of trees so I'm assuming there are some rotting roots now that the trees have gone. They are hard to get to because they are growing through the gaps in the fence. What can I do to get rid of them?

We had to cut down 30 willows and we had some on the rotting stumps we did not touch them and they went away just as moongrower said.

surely just pick them up then throw them away?

That will only get rid of the visible fruiting body not the mycelium growing under the soil which is slowly but surely consuming the tree roots.

Unless they are a real problem I'd just leave them alone. Once the tree roots have rotted they go again.
